THE GATHERING FOR HARRY
Overview:
The Gathering for Harry is a SURPRISE live virtual Birthday celebration for the legendary Harry Belafonte.
This event is anchored by Mr. Belafonte’s beloved organization, The Gathering for Justice, and hosted by friends and family including Common, Brea Baker, Ira Gilbert, Gaye Theresa Johnson, Jason Daley Kennedy, Michael Latt, Tamika D. Mallory, Carmen Perez-Jordan, Susanne Rostock, and Brian Satz.
As Mr. Belafonte’s celebrated his 94th Birthday, we came together to honor his tremendous contributions with his closest family, artists, activists and justice-seekers who have been impacted by his legacy. His virtual surprise party featured live performances, video tributes and testimonials by civil rights and racial justice leaders, elected officials, artists, athletes and many more — paying homage to the legend, and the proud founder of The Gathering for Justice.
As our nation faces a critical time in our democracy, and the fight to protect our freedom, much of the work of today’s movement for justice is inspired by the leadership, legacy and guidance of Mr. B, as he’s lovingly called. Together, we will use this historic virtual event to tribute his life and the gifts we’ve received from his contributions.

The Gathering for Justice has convened millions of people and achieved historic victories over our first 15 years. Whether we’re incubating major mobilizations like the 2017 Women’s March, training young leaders who are making change, or leading the way on tangible policy change, we believe in building collective power that is intersectional, intergenerational and intercultural. Our approach to achieving transformative change is rooted in Kingian nonviolence, a historical tactic that is not passive but a strength-based approach to achieving justice. We build the “beloved community” by uplifting the leadership of people who are directly impacted by injustice.
